Chapter 17

Faun

I pull my shoulders back and stalk into Mayne’s room with my best ‘don’t fuck with me’ face, ready for war if he wants to start shit about me hooking up with Nanuk, Steve, and Sabre yesterday.

I’m not sure why we were all called in here for a pack meeting, but my guess is Mayne’s dissatisfaction over what happened, and I’m not going to let him or any of the others tell me what I can and can’t do with my body now that I know what I’ll be missing out on.

“Stand down, soldier,” Alfa says to me with amusement, reading my hard expression. “You’re not here for a fight, so relax a little.”

As the last of us join our little tête-à-tête, I brace myself when Mayne turns his full attention on me. I freaking knew it. I barely manage to stop my eyes from rolling at his stern expression.

“Get on with it then,” I grumble, frustrated because I’m over this shit now. It’s been going on too long, and I refuse to let anyone make me feel guilty or worried about my sexual needs. I’m a grown-ass woman and I know what I want.

Mayne rubs his face, seeming agitated, and sits on the end of his bed before leaning on his elbows and looking up at me. “I’m sorry, beautiful,” he starts, and my jaw drops open. I didn’t even know he knew that word. “I wish that when I called a meeting, you didn’t automatically assume it’s because I’m going to attack or berate you over something, and that’s on me. I’m not sorry for wanting to protect you, and I’m not going to say I’m not still concerned, but at the end of the day, it’s your choice who you choose to take to your bed. Just be careful.”

“As much as I appreciate the sentiment, my sex life should never be the item of topic in a pack meeting,” I retort, not unkindly but with enough force that it’s clear that I’m done with this being an issue.

“Noted and agreed.” Mayne nods once. “Now, to the actual reason we’re here. You’re not going to be happy about this, but it needs to be said if we’re going to keep peace within our pack.” His gaze slides to Steve, who has his arms crossed and a smug look on his face.

What’s that about?

“Recently, Tallon came across a very serious conversation between Dr. Micheals and Antonio that has changed everything as we know it,” Mayne starts, his focus now fully on me. “Before you get all pissed off with us for not telling you straight away, please remember that we were doing it so that you could feel at peace as long as possible. There’s no way to sugarcoat this. They are planning on killing all of us and starting their experiment again from scratch.”

My heart stops, and the room seems to shrink in on me. The only noise I can make out is the beating of my heart inside my head.
